Philosophy is about asking questions! It’s a quest for wisdom (not “knowledge”)!
It starts with asking the right questions, questioning things around, norms, beliefs, questions around a problem or a challenge.
Once we start chasing a problem or phenomenon with its why, hows, why nots, when all, where, when not etc. we shall eventually align towards a conclusive outcome, favorable or otherwise and unfold new insights which, no matter what, would be valuable and useful to future or further work in many contexts.
Science helps us find the answers and connect the dots. But the answer only came into being, because we asked a question at the first place!
In today’s fingertip information powered generation and hyper connected internet civilization, answer is a search away, IM away, ask away for most things under the sun. So to say science is easy, cheap today i.e. answers are around and easily accessible.
But Science (the Answer) by itself, as is, is not the solution or concrete physical something!
We need to be applying the science (answers we found by asking the right questions) to solve practical problems or to bring new innovations using the insights attained, for betterment of things, to move the human race forward.
Applying knowledge, science is the ART part! And it’s where we as individuals differ a lot in terms of applying knowledge, practices, tailoring based on problem domains; we need good ‘Art’-ists, ‘Tailors’, ‘Craftsmen’ for bringing better, beautiful, elegant things, implementations to life!
So, for “most” of the work we do, we need people who are at the first place good ‘Philosophers’ (inquisitive, ask questions..) so to term and good ‘Artists’ (applying knowledge, tailoring solutions based on unique circumstances) to deliver good results and practically suitable & effective solutions. Science can be found in books, sites, got from people and is a cheaper commodity in the internet civilization.
How about focusing more on a person’s
1. Quantity & Quality of Questions asked on a given problem or topic.
2. Choice of tools, approaches, balancing ambiguity, trading-off fineness in line with important metrics/goals of the solution.
when we assess people (potential employees, project team members, consultants..) for mapping to work assignments instead of stressing more or equally on past skills, knowledge etc.?
* Of course there are areas/work where ‘ART’ part may not come into play that big, if the work scope just stops in inventing the science or the answer e.g. scientific research labs.
